Patient Testimonial: Down Syndrome Awareness Month

October is Down Syndrome Awareness month. This month stands to raise awareness and celebrate the life and accomplishments of our loved ones who have been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) seeks to break down barriers and focus on promoting advocacy for people with Down syndrome.

While recognizing those with Down Syndrome, it is important to understand what exactly Down Syndrome is. Down syndrome is a condition where a person is born with an extra chromosome. A human is typically born with 46 chromosomes, but a baby with Down syndrome has an extra copy of one of those chromosomes, chromosome 21. It is important to note that people diagnosed with Down syndrome are just like everyone else. They have similar dreams and goals, and they want to have successful careers and families. They can drive, ride a bike, go to school/work, attend college, go on dates, get married and so much more. People diagnosed with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities with the help and support of those around them.

At Sentido Health, we strive to create a safe, welcoming environment for all our patients and their families by aiding in positive support and becoming the community they need to lead fulfilling and productive lives. This month Sentido is honored to give a special highlight to one of our patients, Paul Grafa.
