Sibling Inclusion
Siblings of those with complex medical needs can sometimes feel left out due to the parents' needed attention on the child with health concerns. Most siblings want to help and be involved in caring for their brother and/or sister; however, it can still be difficult and involve sacrifices for the siblings. In this blog we will provide ways to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where siblings feel valued, connected, and empowered.
Family Time
Make family activities a regular thing. Quality time is important when it comes to making everyone in the family feel included. Plan special weekly dinners, trips to the park, or movie nights with the entire family. This will help create a bond not only between you and your children, but also help them become closer as siblings. Consider rotating who picks the activity to give each child a voice and a sense of importance.
Open Communication
Ask about and listen to how they are feeling. Communicating is key when it comes to navigating tube feeding with siblings. Be respondent if your children have any questions, comments, or concerns about their siblings medical condition or medical supplies. This will make them feel more confident in themselves and they will become more willing and open to helping. Create a safe space where siblings know their feelings are valid, whether they are expressing love, frustration, or confusion.
One-on-one Time
One-on-one time with siblings can help them feel loved and valued. Even if it is a trip to an ice cream shop, getting individualized attention will help them feel valued. Schedule this time intentionally, whether it’s a monthly outing or a special bedtime routine, so that each child feels like they have their own unique connection with their parents.
Involve Siblings in the Care
Giving them simple medical tasks can help them feel included. They may not be a Tubie themselves, but they are capable of learning tips and techniques to help their sibling when they are in need. Assign age-appropriate tasks such as grabbing supplies, comforting their sibling during tube changes, or helping to track feeding schedules. Praise their efforts to foster a sense of pride and responsibility.
Sibling Support Groups
Having a community and creating united relationships with other siblings of Tubies will help build advocacy and support. Look for local or virtual support groups designed for siblings of medically complex children. These groups offer a chance for siblings to share experiences, ask questions, and build friendships with others who understand the unique challenges and rewards of their family dynamic.
Celebrate Sibling Contributions
Make it a point to celebrate the siblings' involvement and support. Whether it’s through verbal praise, a special treat for their helping out and having patience. Recognition goes a long way in helping them feel seen and appreciated.
Encourage Independence and Hobbies
While inclusion is essential, it’s equally important that siblings have their own space to grow and explore their interests outside of their medically complex family life. Encourage them to join sports teams, take up hobbies, or spend time with friends, helping them build their own identity and resilience.
Creating a balanced and inclusive environment for siblings of medically complex children takes intention and compassion. By fostering open communication, encouraging involvement, and recognizing their unique roles, families can help ensure that all their children feel valued, supported, and connected. Sibling inclusion not only strengthens family bonds but also builds empathy and lifelong connections.
